Electric Vehicle Platform

Kindred Grayback EVP is an in-house electric vehicle platform, built from the ground up to support every Kindred conversion. Over four years and millions of dollars in development, our team created a system that approaches OEM-level engineering in both scope and discipline.

Taking its name from the USS Grayback (SSG-574), an innovative submarine built at Mare Island, now home to Kindred Motorworks, the platform is designed to bring that same forward-thinking mindset to classic vehicles. It lets us seamlessly electrify a wide range of vintage cars and trucks, uniting premium components with proprietary Kindred controls that coordinate heating, cooling, battery management, power distribution, charging, and other core functions.

Every Kindred Battery Pack is hand-built at our Mare Island headquarters. Designed and assembled to OEM-level standards, our packs are built for longevity and serviceability. Our proprietary battery architecture prioritizes safety, reliability, and efficiency.

Kindred Chill Plate 2

Kindred's thermal management system, specifically our Chill Plate, optimizes the operating temperatures for the high-voltage battery, motor, and inverters to ensure peak performance while optimizing component life. It’s also responsible for delivering efficient cabin heating and air conditioning.

Electric Platform Design

Kindred EV Battery CAD

Kindred aims for a minimum range of 200 miles – enough for 99% of daily car trips. This requires creative engineering from Kindred and our partners on battery pack configuration and mounting systems.

A high-voltage power distribution unit (HV PDU) is the EV battery’s central hub, routing power to the inverter, charger, DC-DC converter, and auxiliaries. It uses fuses, contactors, pre-charge, isolation monitoring, and interlocks to protect circuits while the VCU/BMS coordinates safe startup, shutdown, and fault response for the entire high-voltage system.
